After a few bumps in the road during the first-third of our move, we made it to Houston! On Thursday morning, our movers showed up 30 minutes early. This would have been a great thing, but the PODS guy wasn't there because we told him to come 30 minutes later since our movers didn't start until 9:00.
We lucked out with the loading company. They said we would get "four guys." In actuality we had seven: four loaders, two packers (the "tetris guys") and one boss man. They did an amazing job. My only complaint: about half-way through, they all kept telling us, "it's not gonna fit. You're gonna have to get a U-haul." I kept looking at all the stuff we still had to pack in the POD and assessing the amount of available space. The result? I started to get a little (okay, A LOT) panicked. As fate would have it, right around the same time, my vacuum quit working AND my aunt showed up for a visit. That moment was pretty chaotic and stressful, full of frustration and anxiety and thoughts of what we might be able to leave behind. I kept kicking myself for not selling more stuff at the garage sale. Stephen kept telling me to "have faith." We kept having to tell the movers to keep taking stuff down, even though it may not fit in the POD. (I think they mentally gave up on moving once they thought it wouldn't all go. They kept looking for things that they could avoid taking down, but it ALL had to go THAT DAY.) My husband is a wonderful example of remaining calm and optimisic amidst adversity. He does have great faith. And the "tetris guys" came through! They saved us from having to leave our belongings by the dumpster. They were able to pack (almost) everything into the PODS container. What didn't fit? Our elliptical, a rocking chair, a fan, one box, the vacuum cleaner, and our barbeque grill. Not too bad.
Our movers left and we got busy cleaning. Stephen made several loads out to the garbage, I finished the bathroom and the kitchen. Even though our vacuum couldn't finish the job, our friend Jae saved the day by bringing hers over. (Thanks, Jae!) We got it all done and turned in the keys to the place that has been home for the past six years. (Our apartment manager couldn't believe how clean the apartment was, and we got ALL of our deposit back!)
At Grama Sue's house, we had to UNLOAD the misfit stuff out of the truck. The elliptical was too high to fit in the driveway. Once you moved the elliptical, everything else had to move, too. We were glad to be done with the moving and packing, though. It was nice to spend one more evening with family.
We planned to get on the road the next morning, "as soon as Kyle woke up." Kyle woke up at 3:00 a.m. We tried to get him back to sleep, but by about 4:30, realized this wasn't happening. Stephen found a flashlight, pulled the truck out of the garage, and we started tying things down for the trip. We were quite a sight, or would have been if anyone was awake at that hour to see us. There we were: me, holding Kyle in one arm and a flashlight in the other, Stephen, working and sweating at 5:00 a.m. to get everything secure. We got it packed, left Midland, and closed that chapter in our life. It was pretty funny to make it all the way to Houston by 2:00 in the afternoon. We're usually pulling in after midnight! Instead of going to bed, we were able to jump right into the pool. Kyle was SUCH a good boy and slept ALL night! Mom and dad are very grateful to catch up on some much-needed sleep.
It's nice to spend time with more family before we move so far away. Kyle is having a great time being the center of attention. Here's a couple of pictures with Uncle Bando. The phrase you normally hear is "it's like taking candy from a baby." Kyle switched it up and proved that sometimes it's the baby that takes the candy!
