Cup Pup

I've been trying to find a day to get a picture of Evan in the latest Dr. Seuss outfit in our Cooper family collection.  It's hard to get this little monster to sit still these days, but here's a few good ones.

 This is a classic BABY MONSTER face.  {You can see the open drawers behind him, and he's on the lookout for more trouble.....}

First Day of Chemo

My bags were packed last night, I wore a new outfit, and I was up early this morning to get ready for the big day.  It's almost like the first day of school...with less recess and only one subject.   My mom did get to take me on this big first day, just like she did all those many years ago!

Report and Resolutions

January is a time for celebrating the new year, looking back on your goals for the old year, and making new goals to focus on in the next months.  I had some goals in mind as I was preparing to write my annual report and resolutions blog post.  In fact, this post has been in my drafts for a few weeks.  Half-way through the month, my life stopped for an instant when I heard about being diagnosed with breast cancer.  Everything I was thinking I wanted to do this year froze in time, and I now have new life goals for 2013.

First, I think it's important to reflect and report on how we did in 2012.

Stephen "doesn't DO resolutions," but here's what he said his goals for last year were:
  • "Be more awesome this year than I was last year, if that's possible."
  • Get a "Best Dad" mug.
  • Buy my brothers a Forever Lazy, in pink, and have them wear it.
Ah, yes.  You KNOW you can just HEAR Stephen's voice coming out in these goals....

He was pretty awesome last year.  I'll give him that.
He did get a "Best Dad" mug, and uses it quite often for "Daddy's Juice."  {passion fruit juice}
The pink Forever Lazy-s didn't happen, but we are working on having a special someone design a pattern and having some special pink ones commissioned.  Maybe EVERYONE should get a pink Forever Lazy and wear them in honor of BTHO cancer year.

I must say, Stephen's *difficult* and *completely measurable* goals for 2012 went in his favor.

He said that he doesn't really make resolutions, so his goal for 2013 is "just to make it."  I'll second that.

Now, my turn.  Last year, I said I wanted to:

  • Read the Book of Mormon, studying along with our Sunday School lessons.  I would like to try to learn one new scripture each month, maybe along with the Primary???
*I started off really well, following along with the assigned lessons.  Then, I got called to teach a different class, and started studying the information to go along with those.  My bookmark is still in the middle of the BOM.  I need to work on that!
  • GET INTO A HOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*Done, and done!
  • Be more involved, whether in Kyle's school, a play group, Iron Chef, etc.
*I did this, and it made me very happy.  I was able to help with a few class parties, read to Kyle's class, go to a few different play groups, start up Iron Chef, have a few parties, and make some wonderful new friends in many connections of my life.  It was a great year on the social front!
  • scrapbook
*NOT ONE PAGE.  :(
  • start working out again, and start incorporating more healthy meals each week.
*I did this.  Even though I didn't get down to goal weight, I was working out regularly, as I made a pact with myself to only watch "my shows" while I was on the elliptical.  It was a great motivator.

  • Enjoy more of the everyday happy moments.
*I really tried at this one.  I still need more work on it, but I do feel like my outlook "in the trenches of motherhood" was improved.

Overall, not a bad job for 2012.

Goals for 2013:

LIVE.
Realize I'm not superwoman, and I'm going to have to be a little selfish and focus on me and my family and getting rid of breast cancer.
Continue to enjoy and hold dear the everyday, precious moments.
Continue to blog about my journey.
Be more compassionate and forgiving.
Develop a stronger testimony of my Savior.

Maybe I should just quote President Dieter F. Uchtdorf from his General Conference talk "Of Regrets and Resolutions."
  • Resolve to spend more time with those we love.
  • Resolve to strive more earnestly to become the person God wants us to be.
  • Resolve to find happiness, regardless of our circumstances.
It's going to be a rough year, but I am mainly focused on staying positive and getting healthy and keeping the things that are most dear and most precious in the forefront.

Muddy Buddies

Wednesday was a busy day, to say the least.

The entire morning and into the afternoon was spent getting scanned from head to toe.

I also had my first Personal Progress Party at church for the Young Women group.  I just got called to be the leader, was given the option to not go through with it with the cancer diagnosis, but want to still be involved as much as I can.  We did a Pancake Party, but it was very casual.  All the other leaders helped bring pancake batter and toppings.  We did an intro to goal-setting for the year, and updated all the records in personal interviews while the girls ate pancakes and chatted.  It ended up being relaxed, fun, and pretty easy.

The stressful part came in dealing with everything else prior to getting there.

I really thought I had a great plan on timing.  My neighbor was going to come over to bridge the gap between the time I had to leave for church and the time when Stephen got home from school.  I had planned out the morning by putting BBQ pork in the crockpot for sandwiches.  It was cooked, shredded, and ready to go.  While the boys were sleeping, I swept, mopped, and vacuumed and showered.  I had it planned out perfectly to have just enough time to get ready, have the boys fed, and run by the store to pick up a few last-minute things and the bank to make a deposit.

I sent the boys to play outside so I could finish getting ready and then get dinner on the table.  Of course, baby monster went straight to something he could climb in and tear apart.

Before I could finish getting ready, the hospital called to do my pre-surgery interview.  That lasted 20 minutes.  I still had time, but would just have to cut out the bank.

I asked Kyle to go get his brothers to come inside for dinner.  He ran to tell me, "Mom, something really bad has happened."  Thinking there would be crying/bleeding involved, I ran to the backyard.  It was bad, but not in the way I had expected:

Ah, boys!  They found the ONE area in our yard with mud and decided to jump/play/run/roll/dance in it.

Ryan even "helped" Evan get fully covered.

 Really, boys?  Really?!?

So, dinner wasn't on the table, I had to strip the boys down and run them to the tub.

My neighbor showed up in the middle of this stress and chaos.  I had to throw the plates on the table, only clothe the 2 younger boys in diaper/underwear, and rush out the door, apologizing.  I made it to the store, but was stuck in awful traffic--construction during rush hour and only one lane around my exit to 290?

But, I made it to the church, we had a great time, and the boys were fed, cared for, and in bed when I got home.

14 Months Old

I totally missed the 11th of this month, Evan's 14-month milestone.  It could have *nothing whatsoever* to do with us all being sick, finding out about "the cancer," or that it's all I can do to just try to keep my baby explorer out of bathrooms, the pantry, or from climbing to and from falling from high places.

Evan is a good baby, still.  Even though he's technically a toddler now and will be a big boy before we know it, he's our Baby, a good one at that.  He's happy, more of a talker than either of the other boys were, already saying Ma-ma, Da-da, Ha {Hot}, Wow, and maybe a few more words I can't recall at the moment.

He loves to climb in, on, and through things.

Evan loves his bear snuggly thing, his binky at sleeping times, THROWING BALLS, electronic devices/remotes, and Daddy.  He is the biggest Daddy's boy of all the boys, and I think it's adorable.

We love this little guy so much---just stop getting in.to.everything, K?

Ginger

I got my first cancer wig today.  All this dressing up will be fun, no?  I threw it on and came out of the bathroom, as if nothing was different.  Ryan did a double-take and laughed.  He said, "Mommy!  {ha-ha-ha} You have a funny hat!"

TODDLER MONSTER!

My goodness, being a mom is hard!

I've heard it said that the Lord doesn't give you anything that you can't handle, so I'm humbled at how strong He must think I am.

Just being a mom of 3 little boys is rough and hard.  Now I'm going to be going through cancer on top of it.  It's quite overwhelming!

Just a little bit of my mini heart-attacks from ONE MORNING:

A friend wanted to meet up at our new playground that just opened in our section of the neighborhood.  That's great because I could just walk there with the 2 youngest boys.  I left them playing in the gameroom while I went to get my shoes on.  When I went upstairs to get Ryan and turn off the lights, Evan wasn't in there.

This is where I found him:

We came home from the park and ate lunch.  Evan, as usual, was done quickly.  I was hoping to make a few phone calls while he was in his high chair--a few doctors, to check on a return--but he was already finished before I could get through the 2nd call!  I got him down and cleaned up and just let him play while Ryan finished eating and I made that last call.  I had to look up an account number on the computer, so I was sitting in the office.  I hear Ryan say, "No, Baby!  NO!  My drink!"  I thought Evan was just bugging Ryan, trying to reach up and steal his drink.  So, I called into him while I was just finishing up my call.

Then, I went back into the other room to figure things out.  They were much, much worse than Evan just bugging Ryan and trying to steal his drink:

He was up on the table, stealing Ryan's food {scrappy}, knocked Ryan's drink all over the floor, had dropped pretzels into the centerpiece, and was UP ON THE TABLE!!!!!!!

Man, it's going to be a rough few months.

Five and a Half!

Our first baby is getting so big!
Kyle's half birthday was a hard day for his mom and dad.

I did try to make a big deal out of it being his half birthday, and he even got a little embarrassed over that!

Some things about Kyle lately:
He is a good helper to me.  Sometimes, he's a little TOO bossy, but I usually know when things are array when Kyle is around.  He loves to play on the ipad and wii.  He's also excited about starting baseball soon.  He loves to set up all kinds of imaginary structures for his angry birds and other stuffed animals, which is how he usually spends quiet time in his room. That or reading, which he still LOVES to do, but hardly ever actually napping--only when he's sick.

Kyle has several jobs he does everyday.  He's getting very good about getting his morning routine done before I even ask him to do it---just still needing a little help getting the toothpaste on the toothbrush without making a complete mess.

Kyle loves his new Mario Brothers movie  he got for Christmas and Thomas the Train videos.  He enjoys coloring MUCH more than he used to and will actually choose this as an activity every now and then.  He plays outside well with his brothers.  One of our favorite things right now is, "See you at the finish line!" As we race upstairs, or down the hall.  It's our new thing to say to signal a race.  Whoever gets there first yells, "Winner!!"

Kyle is in the big CTR 5 class at church.  He's enjoying things more and more.  He'll even sing every now and then.  He's also LOVING his Bridge class at Wee Wuns and making lots of friends.

Kyle has learned to be much more thoughtful lately.  He will do more and more helpful things without having to be asked.  He will usually tell me "Mommy, I love you" every night as I tuck him in to bed.

Our oldest boy is growing up, and I'm sure he'll grow up more than he should have to in the next 6 months.  I know it's going to be hard dealing with his Mommy being sick, but Kyle is going to be such a great helper!

How we love our Poop Scoop!

World Rocked

Today I found out that I have breast cancer.

I'm in total shock.

It's been a whirlwind of a week--mammogram and ultrasound on Monday.  Biopsy of a breast lump on Wednesday.  Talk to my referring doctor today with the news that it's cancer.  Sent straight down to a specialist to discuss options.  Meeting with an oncologist tomorrow.

I really am in total shock.

It's been a long week, and I'm very emotional.  I don't know much more than just a verbal diagnosis, but the doctors all wanted to get going ASAP.

I feel like I have great care and will kick cancer's butt.

Thank Yous

It's 2:00 a.m., and I can't sleep.  I've got a lot on my mind, and I'll record many of those thoughts as the week goes on.

It's been an interesting few weeks with everyone being sick.  Time has simultaneously seemed to slow down while still constantly ticking as I try to keep up with the cleaning, disinfecting, and laundry behind it all.  While there was more work to do and less energy with which to do it, there was more sleeping, more cuddling, more resting, fewer places to be, and more inside activities to fill our time.

I enjoyed that Kyle would ask everyday, "Can I wear my pajamas ALL DAY again?!?"  I enjoyed that I could answer, "YES!"  It was nice to cozy up on the couch with my boys, Pedialyte-laced Gatorade in hand, warming under their favorite blankets and watching movies.  I was able to deal with cleaning up diarrhea, vomit, and spills a bit more easily knowing that my cooking for the day would only involve bringing water to boil for 3 minutes or pushing some buttons on the microwave.  It was simplistic chaos.

And, in that week-or-so of sickness and rainy days, we were able to color, finally do some crafts, and actually write thank-you cards and get them mailed off before the end of January!

I'm so glad the boys helped me make these and helped me remember what to say.

And if we somehow missed sending you a formal thank-you card, please know that we thank you for your love and for all you do for our family!

Toddler Monster

We have another toddler monster on our hands.  This guy is LITERALLY into EVERYTHING! If he can climb in it or on it, he does.  He can can empty it, he will.  If he can throw something in it, watch out.

There's a reason nap time is sacred.

Speaking of nap time......

Our Week

I'm tired of looking at that "sick" post, so I'm putting up another short one.

This week has been gloomy and rainy.  However, I've LOVED staying in PJs most of the week, watching lots of movies, not having to cook much more than Ramen noodles, soup, and microwaved chicken pot pies.  There's also been long naps taken by everyone....including Kyle...so I've been able to get many things done.  It's been hard dealing with all the sickness, cleaning up messes, trying to bleach/Lysol every surface of the house, and be a happy/cheery mom.  Let's just say that I've failed in one {or more} of those areas in the last few days, and there hasn't been much to blog about.

The kids and I are finally better....knock on wood.  There hasn't been vomit or diarrhea for almost 2 full days!  The boys played so well today and have been much happier.  Kyle was SO excited to show me what he built during quiet time and wanted me to take a picture....after Ryan woke up, too.  My favorite part is the beaver inside the dog's mouth, resting on a pillow.

{Side note: I took this photo with iPhone...finally realizing why my pictures on my phone always come out looking so blurry/pixelated.  When the worker at Best Buy set up my phone and put the case on, he left the plastic on the back.  I haven't taken the cover off since!  But, in trying to fix the problem, I FINALLY updated my software, only to screw up Stephen's phone, somehow "crossing the streams" and linking our numbers over iCloud.  We didn't figure it out until he started getting all of my texts this morning and couldn't send out any texts; they just returned to his own phone.  I had to totally reset and start fresh, but we are back on.  That just added to a long list of to-do's for today!}

Even though the rest of us seem to be feeling much better, Stephen just came home early from work not feeling well, so hopefully he can get a few days of rest and let the bugs from Ecuador fight his battles.  I'm off to microwave another pot pie and put everyone to bed at 8:00.

Sick

I dislike having sick kids.

Being sick and dealing with sick kids is even worse.

At least we've all been able to stay in our PJs, drink lots of juice/gatorade, and watch all of our new movies and then some.

I'm very thankful for our washing machine, as it has been put to much use in the last few days.  And Zofran.  I'm very thankful for Zofran.

I've Lysol-ed the house, scrubbed the floors, washed all the sheets, and tried to disinfect every surface.

Here's to hoping this bug is on its way out.

Cotton Bowl

Johnny Football and our Aggies played in the Cotton Bowl.  Even though we couldn't be there in person, we had a great time hosting a little gameday party at our house on Saturday.

Everyone got their Maroon Out on.

Gig 'em!

The boys had fun playing around while we passed the time until kick off.

We attempted to get a family picture in our Aggie gear.  Too bad Po already had a few too many drinks.

Here we are, watching the Aggies BTHO ou!

Whoop!

Oh, So Pretty

Evan loves to get into my bathroom drawers.  He's already smashed a bottle of cologne and thrown my brand new straightener into a tub of water.  Lately, he's on the hunt for accessories.  I can't keep this headband away from him!  Footballs and bows.  What a beautiful boy.  We would've made an adorable little girl.

No New Year's Baby

Knowing that Evan is my last, this family's "baby," keeps me focused even more on the milestones, especially those that point to how Baby is no longer much of a baby.

For example, I opened the last of the Aggie binkies.  Back story: When Kyle was born, we received a few of these as gifts.  Kyle had these attached to him for the first 18 months of life, and he got so used to these certain pacifiers that he wouldn't take any others.  By the time we realized this, we were already in Miami, far from a source for Aggie pacifiers.  We also found that even the interweb was not a trusted supplier for these treasures.  I finally found a fellow hoarder on ebay and bought the entire stock.  Well, December 2012 marked a milestone in our family: I opened the last of our stock.  Sorry, Baby.  When this one wears out, that's it.

Also, we had to move Evan's crib down to the lowest level after he climbed/fell out on his face a few days before Christmas.  There's no where else to go but to a big boy bed.  How un-baby is that?  {I was also pretty proud of myself--I did the crib thing all by myself.  After setting up/adjusting that thing so many times, I've finally figured it out, right at the point that the skill will no long be needed in our home.}

Next, Christmas Eve marked another milestone.  Evan had his first hair cut.  He has extremely straight, fine hair, but he was working on quite the mullet.  Even though I didn't have to cut much from the top, it was time to get that "party in the back" back under control.  He seems so much more grown up even with a simple hair cut.

Here's just one more example of our days of babies slipping away.  When we first found out that we were pregnant with a boy--Kyle--Grandpa made his first purchase for the future grandson, an Atlanta Braves outfit.  Well, we've come full-circle and our last boy fits into this first purchase.

I'm truly trying to remember the little things and to cherish even the smallest of milestones.  Before I know it, I'll be searching for Aggie pacifiers and Braves outfits for my own grandchildren.

New Year's Eve

We had a casual, laid-back New Year's Eve this year.  It's kind of hard to go out and do a lot with the boys, anyway.

After a yummy dinner of clam chowder and muffins and chocolate cake, we did a few small fireworks with the kids.  Evan HATED them at first, but was fine just staring into the light of a sparkler when Grandma held it.

Kyle LOVED the fireworks, especially because he got to manage the order.  Mr.  Bossy, indeed.  Wonder where he gets that?

 McKinley had a great time!

Ryan was really only interested in the poppers; he didn't want anything to do with a sparkler.

I was there, too, taking pictures and praying our neighbors wouldn't report us.

 I love Ryan's face in this one.  {Get that thing away from me! }

Soon after the fireworks, it was bedtime for the children.  The adults stayed up and played some games, talked, and laughed.  Football was on, too.  Anyone else see the ending of that LSU game coming?

The fam left around 11:30.  We were so close to ringing in the New Year, and our neighbors were having a party.  We ran next door, talked a little, jumped in on a fun "drinking" game, and caught the countdown just in time.

A few toasts, some hugs and kisses all around, and we said good night.  It's obvious who has little children who have no idea what it means to sleep in.

So long, 2012 and Merry New Year!
