How grateful I am for good schools for my babies.
We avoided a potential disaster last week by discovering early that somehow Kyle's records got sent to the new school, and he wasn't registered. I would not have discovered this early enough without going in last week. With the craziness of this new cancer diagnosis, Ryan missed his original Kindergarten assessment date, but I was able to reschedule after explaining our situation. While Ryan was playing his assessment games, I was able to talk to the assistant principal and the counselor about my concerns for the boys and was assured that both Ryan and Kyle would be taken care of and have special attention. Also, if there as anything I needed to come talk about, they would be here for me, too. At the same time, I was told by the secretary that I had not completed Kyle's online registration, so his records were sent with the others to the new school. I HAD completed the online part and was able to log in and prove it. Somehow, the system didn't register Kyle, and he almost slipped through the cracks. I was able to breath a sigh of relief when we checked the mail and found BOTH Kyle and Ryan had Meet the Teacher postcards with assigned teachers!
Yesterday, Stephen was able to come with me to the Meet the Teacher at Greens Prairie. It's a good thing he did, as it would have been quite difficult to drag in all those supplies for both kids. This is the first time we have had more than one child in school, so that was also challenging to try to juggle being everywhere and doing everything we needed to do.
Thankfully, both boys' teachers had already been briefed on what's going on with our little family. I felt such love and support already, and am so grateful that the boys will have even more support and love during this hard time.
Ryan was a little shy meeting his teacher, Mrs. Grant. I think he was excited to look around his classroom, and was able to see where he would go each day. It's helpful that Kyle will be able to help him know where to go, so I don't expect him to be nervous or unsure about his first day. Plus, he will have a friend from church in his class, too!
Kyle will actually have two teachers this year. His homeroom teacher is Mrs. Sullivan. She knew us and gave us a hug right away, especially because she has a brother named Kyle, and told my Kyle that his name is easy for her to remember. She also wrote her cell phone number down for me on the back of her card and told me to text her with anything I needed her to know.
Kyle also has some friends in his class. Even though he was annoyed at first to be out in the portable, once we got there, he saw how cool his classroom is. He especially liked the tree in the corner with the huge monkey, the leopard, and the snake hidden on the branches. I think he's excited!
Mrs. Bingaman is Kyle's reading teacher. She shared with us that she is a cancer survivor and her 23-year-old son is currently battling cancer. She will have a special place in her heart for understanding for Kyle's hard times.
We picked up our awesome t-shirts, got some ice cream, and headed home. We are excited for school to begin! One more week of summer!
