June Projects

I realized that I only wrote 6 posts in the month of June.  SIX!  In nearly 6 years, I've NEVER written such a small amount of blog posts in a month.  It hasn't been that we've had nothing going on.  In fact, quite the opposite is true.  I've been busily trying to get things off my to-do list, finish projects around the house, have some summer fun with the boys, oh....and try to not let cancer drag me down.   I was able to get quite a bit of things done in the month of June--not all by prior planning.  All of these projects kind of just rolled into each other.  It was a bit like If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.....crafting style.

One major goal that has been eating away at me was to get the younger two boys' baby scrapbooks done.  I have a good friend who also has 3 boys and loves to scrapbook, so we were able to motivate each other to get going.  We planned a few nights to get together and start knocking out scrapbook pages.  On one of our "scrapbook" nights, my friend and I actually prepped some stuff for another craft night she was hosting at her house.  In addition to a 4th of July flag craft, she found this idea for a decoration out of dollar store finds.  Out of a plate, vase, drawer pull, and wire trash can....

.....we made these cute decorations!  They can hold all kinds of different things for lots of different holidays.  I made one for Emmy, too, since she's always so crafty and for all her help for coming out and  helping me and the boys.

Since my friend was busy with these other craft projects and vacations, I started working on the boys' scrapbooks on my own.  When I got going on this project, I was able to bust it out pretty easily.  Before Kyle was born, I received a ready-made scrapbook, which I used and added extra personalized pages to.  I was able to find the same book 2 more times, so all the boys have the same thing.  That let me just use Kyle's book as a template for the other 2.  I only have a few more pages to finish in Evan's book, since some of the pictures printed out incorrectly, but it feels really good to be {mostly} caught up on all the baby books!

While I was going through pictures for the boys' books, I was able to sort out portraits of each boy and family portraits that I knew needed to be displayed.  That has been on my list of things to-do for quite some time now, since I've had some pictures leaning against the wall at the end of our upstairs hallway since we moved into the house over a year ago.  Even our most recent family portraits have been sitting in a box for 6 months, waiting for frames.  I haven't hung pictures in the upstairs hallway because I've been waiting to see what I had and to save up some money to buy frames, and frankly have been putting off the commitment of putting nail holes in the brand new walls.  Then, my housekeeper just happened to ask that very week if I was EVER going to hang those pictures in the hallway, and did I want her to help me?  I explained my reasons for still having picture frames leaning on the floor and collecting dust instead of being displayed properly.  One step at a time, I thought---the scrapbooks needed to be completed first.  The next day, I made a run to Hobby Lobby to pick up some more baby boy stickers in order to finish Evan's book.  While I was there, the store just happened to have a TON of home stuff marked down 80%, including picture frames.  I found most of the sizes I needed at great prices--only $8.80, $6.00, and even one for $4.00. It was another sign to help me get the upstairs family portrait hallway done.

With the scrapbooks pretty much completed, I could move onto the portrait walls.  First, I had to tackle transforming one of these black and gold frames into one that matched the other cream ones I found.

A little spray paint, some distressing, and wood stain, and that black and gold beauty became the one in the top middle.  It goes perfectly with the others, I think.  Our portraits from this year are now out of the box in the office and up on the wall!

Next, I had to get going on the upstairs hallway.  Here is how it looked before, complete with frames leaning against the wall at the end. We've only had 3 broken frames in a year and 3 months.

I wanted a collage feel with pictures and other objects.  I found a bunch of C's at Hobby Lobby and painted and distressed them in lots of different colors.  That took a few days.  Next, I filled the frames with some of my favorite pictures, laid out the arrangement on the floor, and played with the placement. Last, I spent one nap time hanging them all up.  Even though Stephen's reaction was something like, "Don't you think it's a bit much??," I like it, and I'm very happy to have completed another task that's been on my to-do list for A LONG time.

Then I got sick.  Really sick.  Like, unable to get out of bed, sick.  I kept wanting to do little things, like eat, but even that was a major task.  It got so bad that my family rallied and got my little sister here to help me.  I had to miss out on our family trip down to the beach in Galveston with Stephen's family.  He was amazing enough to take the boys and go, so my sister and I were left alone for a weekend.  Even though I couldn't do much of anything, together we are still an unstoppable force.  With only one half of our amazing team able to do any work, there were several more projects completed this weekend.  First, Em cleaned out and organized my refrigerator.  Then, we took a wooden closet rod out of an old armoire, added spray-painted finials to the ends, and hung curtains in Kyle's room on a real rod, instead of the old spring-loaded cheap one he had that kept getting yanked down.  Before Stephen left for the beach, he informed me that my stack of boxes in the garage would probably collapse soon because the box at the bottom of the stack was starting to crack, so we needed to change that--STAT.  With my direction and Emmy's labor, we took my boxes from this:

to this:

It's amazing what a few new shelves and a few hours in the garage can solve!  It's silly, really, but having things neat and organized just helps me think better and breath easier.

After seeing that list of projects, it's a lot easier to see why not much blogging went on in June.  Nap Time was spent in other ways!  And just like in the book with that mouse.....when I get projects crossed off my to-do list, it makes room for even more.

Father's Day

All the boys in my home are currently napping, so it's a great time for me to honor the Fathers in our lives.

First, I'm so grateful for the father of my 3 boys.  Stephen is a great dad, and the boys love him so much.  I'm thankful for how hard he works for all of us, for the example he is, and especially how much he loves me.  Kyle isn't here to celebrate this Father's Day with Stephen, but the other boys had a fun time helping me take him breakfast in bed and letting him open presents.  They also made some cards and were *super* excited to pose for a photo op:

Since Kyle's not here, I thought I'd do a little throwback and show one of my favorite pictures of Stephen and Kyle, the day that started it all....

Next, I'm very grateful for my father.  Thanks, Dad, for putting up with me, teaching me, making me do things I didn't want to do, being an example, and always working hard.

Continuing the throwback theme, here's a few gems from the past of my Dad, aka "Gramps."

Happy Father's Day to Stephen's dad, too.  I'm grateful for the dad you've been to Stephen, for the father-in-law you've been to me, and for the Grandpa you've been to the boys.  I have been blessed to marry into a family who has a dad who is a hard working, valiant, faithful, service-minded, honest, loving example.  I'm so grateful for that blessing and the way it continues to bless through the father of my family.

Grandpa and baby Kyle:

It's rarer and rarer that there are good, real, strong, hard-working fathers who lead families in faith, love, and by example.  I'm so blessed to have some of those good ones in my life.

Our New Beach

It turns out that we have had a significant amount of time away from Miami to make us forget just enough to be able to enjoy an amazing day in Galveston.  I'm stealing a friend's motto and deciding to "bloom where you're planted."

Last week we took a day trip down to the beach!  The boys LOVED it.  And, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I did, too.  We went down with a bunch of friends, the boys had plenty of things and people to keep them busy, we all were sufficiently sandy and worn out, and everyone slept amazingly well that night!

Whose kids are the one who wanted to eat THE MINUTE we got there?  Mine.

Then, it was play time!

It's no Miami, but it'll do.

Evan was in love with chasing {and growling at} the birds.  Around 80% of his time at the beach looked like this:

There was also some playing, digging, throwing, and building in sand.

They actually did get in the water, too!

  We were quite the group!

Oh, and a great thing about having boys?  Potty time isn't a big thing.

Sadly, we had to leave the group a little early and head down to the hospital--sand and all--to get some bloodwork done.  Can't wait to go back!

19 Months Old

Evan is no longer a baby, but will always be THE Baby. {And, he's definitely a Baby MONSTER!!!}

I cannot believe Evan is already 19 months old!! Here's a few developments in the last month. Evan:

~had 4 molars grow in.
~no longer sleeps with a binky. I was surprised it only took a few days to break him from that.
~rarely takes 2 naps a day. We are down to one nap unless totally wearing him out.
~still eats like a wild man, especially since he never.sits.still!

~has a 6th sense about unlocked cabinets, opened doors, or any location of something into which he can make a mess.  Never fails.

~is still a Daddy's boy. He helps me with the laundry, and whenever one of Stephen's shirts or scrubs comes up, Evan gets excited and yells, "DA-DA!" he does the same when he hears the back door open and Stephen come in from work. He runs up, grabs his legs, and gives him a big hug.
~is talking more and more: most phrases start with "I want..." and most end with some kind of food. He loves bananas, bread, cheese, rice and beans, queso, sauces, and noodles.
~loves to dance, especially to Gangnam Style and The Harlem Shake.
~has started telling me when he has a dirty diaper. He points down there and says, "ow" because he had some bad diaper rash few weeks ago. Even though the rash is better, he still points and says, "ow"
~has learned to climb up the rope ladder and over the slide on his own.  He also climbs up into his high chair an onto the counter if I forget to put the tray back on after breakfast.  Here, he got his own banana.

~plays pretty well with his brothers.
~throws, scratches, or hits when he's angry, but will quickly come up and give hugs to say sorry.
~is still mostly happy.
~still cries a bit to be left in nursery--he's going through a regression of being left. I think it might have something to do with me being gone all the time for chemo and dropping him or leaving him with so many different people.

I'm most grateful this month for a healthy baby! We needed some time away from infections and more time with our happy little guy, and he's had several weeks without needing meds. We love our BABY!

Dripping Springs

After the wedding, the boys and I stayed in Dripping Springs for a few days.  She's helped out quite a bit while I've had chemo, and I wanted to do something to say thank you.  The last time she was at my house, she made comments about my pantry and how impressed she was.  She even took pictures of it!  I told her I'd be willing to do her pantry, too.

Hers was definitely more of a challenge to organize than mine.  It's MUCH bigger, has MUCH more stuff, and needed much more work.

Before:

Doing this type of a project with so many little "helpers" also added to the challenge.  Evan broke a jar of some kind of jelly, Anderson dropped a jar of tomatillo salsa and cut his hand, and while we were cleaning up that mess, Even managed to open an nearly full container of tangerine snow cone syrup, spilling that everywhere.

We needed a break.

So, we hopped in the car and let the children play at McDonald's until it was nap time.  Of course, they all wanted ice cream cones.  This is Evan's first time to have one all by himself:

During nap time for The Baby, Aunt Terri kept the others busy in the pool, and I was able to get done:

It was a MAJOR undertaking, but that makes the finished product that much sweeter!

After all that hard work, the rest of the week was spent relaxing.

We swam A LOT.  Ryan quickly got over his issues with swimming and was jumping off rocks, into floats, and swimming all over the pool.

The other boys couldn't get enough of the water, also.

I love how well they played together and how peaceful the week was.

We got to meet up with Uncle Mike and Aunt Kelly for some delicious BBQ, meet up with most of my Austin cousins for playtime and grilling, and try out a local pizza joint, Pious, that I can't wait to visit again.

Darn that chemo schedule, but we had to come home.  We need to plan another trip ASAP.
